ARTIST BIO(b. 1975, CHINA)
X.M. Zhang, known for his portraits of beautiful girls reflecting the mental state of young ladies in a modern city, the “Beijing Girl” series have been collected by galleries and collectors around the world. His new work “Zhong Guo Wan Sui” is a segue from his “Beijing Girl” series, the hyper realistic painting of a basketball with the words Zhong Guo Wan Sui (literally translates to “China ten thousand years old”) written on in Pinyin, it is a metaphor for the Chinese spirit and traditions in an environment that continues to be westernized. The words “Zhong Guo Wan Sui” represents what is left of Chinese culture in a society that is slowly eroded by the influx of western culture.
