Fabien Delaube

ARTIST BIO

(b. 1973, FRANCE)

Picasso is my first influence and I appreciate particularly these illustrious artists such Vermeer, Le Caravage and Van Gogh.

In the past, I worked a lot as decorator specialized in theaters, I was always fascinated by the human comedy and how a man can become another by playing a role. I am a profound humanist and I like to make contact with people and the interdependence from one and other. I was always interested in the African masks or the masks from other ancient civilizations, and especially fascinated by their "magic" powers on the peoples.

What interests me and surprises me in the everyday life, is the way many people hide their real personalities or their profound feelings, behind a kind of permanent mask. Once the masks were raised or fell by meetings or events, a fragile and delicate human being would always be found. I paint faces because, for me, there is nothing more expressive as the feelings that pass by a glance. As when you look yourself in the mirror, you can be in the shoes of my characters and feel their emotions I wanted to express. Masks represent a kind of divine perfection, such more than my characters. The look of these masks frightens people and imposes total respect.

Finally, perhaps when my characters get old and when they have found their own roads in life, their masks are starting to disappear...
