Billy Namundja

ARTIST BIO

(b.  AUSTRALIA)

Born in Oenpelli, from the clan of Kardbam and speaking Kunwinjku of Mayali, Billy Namundja is a successful artist in utilizing multi-coloured cross-hatching, a common form of Kunwinjku art. The Kunwinjku incorporated in innovative way, the components from geometric paintings used in the Mardayin ceremony, into their designs. The famous artist Milaybuma also shared this particular pattern derived from bombing bands of red, yellow and white cross-hatching.

Billy’s works achieve a unique sculptural power through the massing of the forms filled with swaths of crosshatch patterns. The relationship between crosshatched spaces to create visual activity also contributes to the liveliness of the images and for Kunwinjku, suggests power of the subject.
